PSA, BGS (Beckett Grading Services), and CGC are the three major grading companies for sports cards — and choosing the right one matters more than most collectors realize. The grader you pick affects your card's resale value, how long you wait, and how much the grading costs relative to the return.
There's no universal "best" — the right choice depends on the card type, your target buyer, and what you're optimizing for. Here's a direct comparison across the factors that actually matter for sellers.
Largest buyer pool. PSA 10s command the highest prices. Most liquid market. Pop reports are widely tracked and respected.
Grading can feel inconsistent — a card that looks like a 10 might come back a 9. Slower at economy tiers. Slab is bulkier than competitors.
Subgrades (centering, corners, edges, surface) provide transparency. BGS 9.5 is highly liquid. Black Label 10 (four perfect 10 subgrades) is the hobby's holy grail for premium modern cards.
BGS 9 commands significantly less of a premium than PSA 9 for many cards. Slower turnaround at lower tiers. Subgrade system can hurt cards with one weak attribute.
Faster and often cheaper than PSA at comparable service levels. Known for consistent, somewhat lenient grading standards — especially on centering. Strong reputation from comics grading background.
Smaller resale market than PSA — fewer buyers specifically seek CGC slabs. Market premiums for CGC 10 are typically lower than PSA 10 on the same card.
Head-to-Head: Which Company Wins Each Category
| Category | Winner | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Resale value (vintage) | PSA | PSA dominates the vintage card market. Buyer preference is clear. |
| Resale value (modern) | PSA / BGS | PSA 10 leads; BGS Black Label is the prestige option for modern chrome cards. |
| Grading transparency | BGS | Subgrades tell you exactly where a card lost points. |
| Turnaround time | CGC | CGC typically offers faster economy service than PSA at similar price points. |
| Price per submission | CGC | Generally the lowest entry-level submission cost of the three. |
| Grading consistency | BGS | Subgrade system makes grading more objective and repeatable. |
| Pop report data | PSA | PSA's registry is the most widely used for tracking card populations. |
| Buyer liquidity | PSA | The most buyers actively seek PSA holders on eBay and other platforms. |
Decision Framework: Which Company to Choose
Submit to PSA if:
- It's a vintage card (pre-1990) — PSA dominates this market
- You're grading for maximum resale value and liquidity
- The card is a significant player's key rookie or short print
- Your buyer pool is broad and mainstream
Submit to BGS if:
- It's a high-end modern chrome card with realistic Black Label potential
- You want subgrades to demonstrate card quality to buyers
- You specifically collect BGS or target BGS buyers
- The card has strong centering and surface condition — subgrades will help, not hurt
Submit to CGC if:
- You want lower submission cost and faster turnaround
- The card has slightly off centering — CGC grades centering more leniently than PSA
- You're testing volume submissions and want to minimize cost
- You collect CGC yourself and plan to hold, not resell immediately
Before submitting any card, calculate whether grading actually makes financial sense. Grading costs $20–50+ per card — only cards with a meaningful grade-up premium on resale justify the cost. A card that sells for $12 raw and $18 graded doesn't pencil out after fees and shipping.
What About SGC?
SGC (Sportscard Guaranty) is the fourth major option, particularly strong in the vintage market. SGC holders have seen a meaningful resurgence in collector acceptance — especially for pre-war cards and early vintage. If you're dealing in T206s, pre-war tobacco cards, or 1950s–60s vintage, SGC is worth serious consideration alongside PSA.
